October 25, 2023
LIONS CBL WOMEN
Lions (114) d Swan Hill Flyers (35)
After the two rounds away to open the 2023 season, the Lions launched into their 1st home opener against the Flyers with a commanding 22 point lead at the first break. A continued suffocating defense kept the Flyers to 11 at the half, and the Lions capitalized on turnovers and ball movement to pour in 57 and put the game well out of reach very early.
Swan Hill started the third quarter well, getting to the foul line and also connecting from long range and forcing turnovers to spark a bit of a run, but the depth and scoring options of the Lions proved too much and the lead keep continuing to grow further in both the 3rd and 4th quarters.
Layla Igelsias returned from injury after taking a massive charge from Maryborough centre Paige Walkley in Round 2 – leading all scorers on the night with 27.
Molly Young and Maisy Hammond combined for 16 while anchoring the defensive pressure and completely locking out the paint from any Swan Hill attack.
Jelena Savic (14 points, 2 made 3PTS), Ella Bradbury (12 points), Ella Thomson (11 points, 3 made 3PTS), Molly Young (11 points), and Bec Marshall (10 points) all contributed double digit coring, with all remaining Lions players hitting the scoreboard as well, in what was a very good overall team effort.
The Lions now sit in 4th place on the ladder and also have their next game at home, hosting the Macedon Ranges on Sunday October 29th – Tip Off 1PM, so we hope another great loud crowd will be there to show their support!
LIONS CBL MENS
Lions (99) d Swan Hill Flyers (61)
In Round 3 of the Country Basketball League, the Bacchus Marsh Lions hosted their first home game in front of a very vocal, large enthusiastic home crowd against the Swan Hill Flyers on Saturday night. After last week’s win against Maryborough, the Lions came out strong, leading the first quarter with a score of 28-16 and simply thereafter maintaining and building on that lead throughout each quarter of the game.
It was a clinical win, with the Lions continuing to dominate the next (3) quarters scoring 18 to 11, 29 to 16, and 24 to 18, all quarters in the Lions favour. The final score of Lions (99) to Swan Hill (61), showed the Bacchus Marsh Lions secured a decisive victory and now have (2) wins and (1) loss for the season keeping them well in touch with the top (4) on the ladder.
From a player perspective both Riley Dunn and ‘Skinny’ Deng Kuol were the standout performers for the Lions, each contributing (16) points to the team’s success and numerous dunks just to make it exciting. Anthony Bowyer also played a crucial role, adding (14) points to the Lions’ total highlighting another great leaders game from Anthony.
What’s further impressive, is that (9) out of the (12) Lions players managed to make their mark on the scoreboard, with (5) of them reaching double digits, showing again that this team is quickly becoming a real team and good teams are always hard to beat.
So in summary, it was a fantastic all around team effort and a convincing win in our Men’s first home game of the season, so let’s all get excited and get along to make some noise at the next home game against Macedon Ranges on Sunday the 29th of Oct !
